At least seven hundred years of construction and demolition, alteration and preservation have produced a palace that features every style from Gothic to Neoclassical within its walls. The particular history of its construction has resulted in a real architectural oddity: since the palace was started at the highest point of the rock, built from the top downwards as it were, the stables and vaulted cellars are actually higher than the third-floor residential suites of later periods. The lower palace is furnished with period furniture and wallpaper to convey a sense of life in the nineteenth century, and presents an exhibition on the palace’s presumably most famous owner, King John of Saxony.
