Pirna’s municipal museum is located in the former Dominican monastery in Pirna, the best-preserved Dominican monastery in Saxony. The entrance building incorporates what remained of the summer refectory: the 1993 reconstruction successfully combines historical and modern architectural elements. A visit to the monastery’s late Gothic chapter house is especially worthwhile; today it features important funerary monuments, examples of the art of sculpture of the sixteenth to the nineteenth centuries. The municipal museum is conceived as a site for research and education in history, and a place where testimonies to and information on life in Pirna and the region are collected and preserved. The focus ranges from the present back to the days of the area's early settlement. Insights attained by modern historical scholarship are vividly conveyed to a broad public with the aid of exhibitions and publications. Interested persons are welcome to use the extensive museum library for study purposes. The Stadtmuseum Pirna is accordingly an integral element of the Dresden culture region.
