Founded in 1948, the zoo is home to more than 400 animals of 150 species. The zoo, which specializes in the breeding of endangered species, became famous for its population of grizzly bears, which is unique in the Czech Republic and has been living here since 1983. Another attraction is the bird aviary, where tropical birds flutter over the heads of visitors between artificial rock and water landscapes. Part of the grounds is dedicated to the fauna of Bohemian-Saxon Switzerland, where birds of prey, snakes, wild boars and wolves live. You can get particularly close to the wild boars on a bridge over the enclosure. The large playground with play castle, monkey ropeway and climbing wall makes Děčín Zoo a true paradise for children. Since 2006, the zoo has had a branch in the city center, the “Paradise Island”. The flora and fauna of the coral reef, the mangrove and tropical forest and the semi-desert are exhibited on four floors.
