The Terezín Memorial was founded in 1947 on the initiative of the Czechoslovakian government as a “Memorial to National Suffering” and is now the only facility of its kind in the Czech Republic. Originally built as a fortress town, Terezín served as a concentration camp from 1941 to 1945. The Small Fortress, which served as a Gestapo prison, is located around one kilometer outside the city. The memorial serves as a memorial to the numerous victims of Nazi racial tyranny and violence. At the same time, it fulfills a research and educational mission. The museum buildings and memorial sites include the Small Fortress with the National Cemetery, the Ghetto Museum, the Magdeburg Barracks, the Prayer Hall from the ghetto period, the Jewish Cemetery with crematorium, the Russian Cemetery, the Soviet Soldiers' Cemetery, the memorial plaque at the railway siding, the memorial on the River Eger, the columbarium with part of the bulwark wall, the mourning hall and the Central Mortuary.
