The “Starý Martin” tunnel was one of the most significant old mining tunnels in the Krupka mining district. It tapped into the Lukáš vein, one of the richest and longest tin ore veins. Mining began here during the 14th century and ceased before World War II. Today, the tunnel offers visitors insights into the excavation of historic long tunnels, the various methods of tunnel support used in the past and present, and the development of mining technology through selected sites of tin mining. In addition, visitors can explore characteristic sections of the Lukáš vein with their mineral fillings, as well as a collection of historical artifacts, an overview of the coats of arms of all mining towns in the Czech Republic, and an exhibition of minerals and rocks. Special attractions include the so-called “Fountain of Happiness” and the stalactite formations. The open-air area of the tunnel complex also features an open-air museum of historical and modern mining technology. The guided tour with expert commentary lasts approximately 45 minutes, depending on interest, and the route is 1,000 meters round trip. A large parking lot is available to visitors across from the tunnel. A room featuring an exhibition of mining tools and promotional materials from the town serves as a waiting area. The facilities also include restrooms. When the weather is nice, visitors can use the outdoor terrace. The tour of the “Starý Martin” tunnel is not suitable for people with physical or mental disabilities. Children under 5 years of age are not permitted.
