The Kunstgewerbemuseum is located in Pillnitz Palace, the idyllically situated summer residence of the Saxon royal dynasty. In this Baroque setting the museum shows craft objects from the Dresden court, ranging from the travel furniture from the chamber containing the Electors’ art collection and magnificent glasses from the court wine cellars to the silver furniture and gold-embroidered wall coverings of the “Paradegemach” (parade rooms) in the Dresden Residenzschloss. Other highlights represent the history of the decorative arts at an international level: French furniture and bronzes, Italian majolica, and precious embroideries, damasks and lace from both Europe and the Orient. The section of the exhibition on "Dresdner Jugendstil" (Dresden Art Nouveau) illustrates the birth of Modernism and, by way of the open depot on the Deutsche Werkstätten Hellerau, forms a transition to the display of trends in present-day design.
