This former summer residence of the Saxon royal dynasty is the largest palace complex in Europe to reflect the taste for chinoiserie. The park, with more than 2,000 trees and shrubs and over 600 plants in tubs, offers fascinating walks at every season. One botanical marvel is a camellia that is over 230 years old, and during its flowering period, from mid-February to mid-April, visitors may walk around inside its protective housing to view it. The historic palm house contains mainly Australian and South African plants. The Schlossmuseum in the Neues Palais has displays on the history of the palace complex and the courtly lifestyle of those who lived there, the fashion for chinoiserie, and festivities and pastimes in the Baroque era. In the Katholische Kapelle (Catholic Chapel) visitors are informed, in a lively and up-to-date manner, about religious life within the palace.
