In Benešov nad Ploučnicí (Bensen), an art-historically significant complex of unadulterated Renaissance architecture has been preserved in the form of the upper and lower castles and the neighboring parish church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary. The buildings are linked to the Meissen noble family of von Salhausen, who came to Bohemia at the beginning of the 16th century and had representative buildings in the Saxon Renaissance style erected here. After the failed Estates Uprising of 1621, the von Salhausen family was also forced to leave the country. The castles changed hands. However, as Benešov nad Ploučnicí never regained the status of a manor house, none of the usual “modernizations” were carried out on the castles. Today, this unique Renaissance ensemble is an attraction - and not just for architecture enthusiasts. An exhibition of furniture, porcelain, weapons, paintings, graphics and arts and crafts illustrates the life of the nobility in the 16th and 17th centuries. A copy of the Triton sculpture by Dutch master Adrian de Vries can be admired in the castle courtyard.
