Not far from Dresden, the capital of Saxony, lies Germany's watchmaking center: Glashütte. Watch manufacturers line the streets here, and everything in the town revolves around the theme of time and the fine timepieces produced here. Since its founding in 1845, the Glashütte watch industry has also made a name for itself worldwide. The German Watch Museum Glashütte provides a comprehensive overview of this long tradition, from its beginnings in 1845 to the present day with today's Glashütte watch manufacturers. Covering an area of around 1,000 square meters, the permanent exhibition displays over 500 Glashütte timepieces, some of which are unique, as well as numerous other exhibits. Several interactive stations also provide interesting information on the topics of time and timekeeping. For example, there is a walk-in encyclopedia that explains numerous terms from the world of watches, and an oversized watch model that clearly illustrates the essential functions of a mechanical watch. At the historic workshop of the Glashütte Original manufactory, one of the founders of the watch museum, visitors can watch watchmakers restoring historic Glashütte watches.
